About
Wisdom Akurugu holds, respectively, BSc Biochemistry (Single Major) and MSc Bioinformatics degrees from the University of Ghana and University of the Western Cape, South Africa. He is currently a PhD student at the Computational Biology division, University of Cape Town, South Africa. The International Society for Computational Biology and the African Society for Bioinformatics and Computational Biology organised a joint ISCB Africa ASBCB Conference on Bioinformatics in Kumasi, Ghana, November 11 - 15, 2019. Wisdom’s involvement with the Student Council began with the one-day Student Council symposium during this conference. He was the vice chair for the Student Council symposium organising committee. He has since been actively following events of the ISCB and the Student Council. Wisdom is interested in understanding genetic factors that place a person at risk of developing diseases. He has been mining human genetic exome data for variations that may protect or predispose asthmatic children on corticosteroid treatment to hypothalamic-pituitary-adrenal suppression (HPAS). He is open to collaborations in the areas of Bioinformatics, Exome Data Analysis, Genetic Variation, Human Genetics, Rare Disease Genetics, GWAS, Structural Bioinformatics, Computational Biology, Statistical Genetics and Biochemistry.
